When Jacob married his first wife, Mary Margaret Troxell, she was 109 years old. She gave birth at the age of 110. His (unknown) second wife only had one child 16 years after they were married. In those 16 years he had a number of children with the woman who would later become his third wife, Mary Ann Dean. He married her when he was 67 and she was 10 months dead.
Of course Mary Ann Dean isn't Mary E Dragoo, the person in the Indiana marriage record. On Mary Ann's profile there's a West Virginia marriage record:
The 1850 census and the Find A Grave memorial are the only evidence Jacob was a doctor. So let's look at those records.
Search the 1850 census with these details: Jacob Kern, born 1820 in Virginia. The doctor is the first result. That does not mean it's correct. The correct record was 7th in the results list when I searched and showed the Kerns family. Kerns with an s.
Then there's the Find A Grave memorial which is proof that a Dr. Jacob Kern is buried in Virginia. A Mary Ann Kern is buried in Indiana. A quick surname search of the cemetery in Indiana shows a Jacob H Kern buried there as well. What are the chances the doctor buried in Virginia is Mary Ann's husband and the carpenter/farmer buried in Indiana is not?
Below is a corrected profile for Jacob. Additions are in red. The children in the censuses are verified as Jacob's offspring by his will. His executor and spouse is Mary E Kern. A copy of the will was uploaded to another tree and attached to this profile.
