This was taken from the same tree as The Time Travelers post about a month ago. The Ma Antonia Vela in that post is either his mother or one of the above wives. It's difficult to tell where the correct line is in this tree but I'll come back to that.
The only way this kind of mess can happen is by mindlessly copying trees. "Oh look, there's Jose Miguel Alanis and there's Jose Miguel Alanis and there's Miguel Alanis. Never mind that each of them is from a different CENTURY, they are all mine, mine, mine."
Genealogy is not an activity you can do without putting some thought into it. It takes deductive reasoning or at least some common sense.
When I've recovered from the head-meets-desk moments from this profile I'll find the correct direct line in this tree and compare it to this disastrous tree. Give me a month to recover from the bruises ;-)
In the meantime I'll be back on Friday with a research tip and next Tuesday with a different disaster. Thanks for reading!

  1. I've found trees like this. I wondered if I should comment on them or not? What's frustrating is it has been copied and now is on multiple trees. If people would only look at it they would know it was not possible.

  2. Tina, It seems that many of the worst trees are from people who did the 2 week trial and then abandoned them. In this post I came up with another solution ;-) http://buwt.blogspot.com/2012/01/this-time-its-personal.html Unfortunately there will always be people who don't read. sigh.

  3. Here's one for you http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/5746532/person/-1322084851

    I contacted the tree owner:

Subject: RE: Mother of Susannah Cooke, Wife of Mordecai Cooke

The woman you have listed with the relationships listed above, Joan Constable, was born more than two centuries earlier than the Cookes. Records indicate that the mother and wife was Frances Ironmonger.

    And got this reply:

I HAVE THE BOOK AND A COOKE

    I gave up...

    1. At some point I may have to do a post on the strange messages and replies. Everything from clueless to belligerent :-P
      I've bookmarked that profile. Thanks!
